BILL CONOUR, ATTORNEY: It's important for an attorney not just to know the law but to know the medicine in every personal injury case, particularly with traumatic brain injury. The lawyer needs to understand what happened to the client, what treatment's available, and what future needs will be necessary to treat the client and treat the traumatic brain injury. A traumatic brain injury can occur in a variety of activities, even walking down the street and tripping and falling and striking your head on a curb or sidewalk. There can also occur in falls from decking or roofs or scaffolding or ladders. Some of the signs of mild traumatic brain injury are: forgetfulness, especially forgetting things that were previously well know such as directions to certain places, forgetting appointments, having to use stiffened notes to remind the person of things. That is one of the earlier signs. Representing a severely injured person is more than seeking compensation for their injury. You're really dealing with a whole new life and many times the person who was alive before the injury is now gone and they've been replaced by a new person who must now approach life with the help and guidance and assistance of us and our staff, as well as the physicians and family.
