The National Safety Council has designated June as National Safety
Month in an effort to promote public
awareness and, hopefully, to decrease the number of injuries and
deaths. Preventable injuries remain a leading risk to public health. Injuries created by
falls, fires, automobile collisions, poisonings and other unintentional events were the
fifth leading cause of death in America in 1997. 93,800 people died of fatal injuries and
19.3 million suffered disabling injuries at work, home and in the community.
Communities, businesses, educational institutions and individuals
are being encouraged to participate in a nationwide effort by holding a variety of
community events to promote the importance of safety. Each of the four weeks in June will
focus upon a different area of safety:
